labhole
[lab-hohl]A scientific researcher who lifts themselves up by putting others down, operating with the primary motivation of bettering their own position at the cost of worsening humanity’s.
Don’t be a labhole.
Scientific research is already a challenging endeavor; don’t make it more difficult by being a labhole. Treating others with disrespect, whether that’s your peers, your superiors, your students, or anybody else you interact with, leaves a lasting impression; it discourages the open exchange of ideas, and destroys trust. Human relationships form the basis for all that is good in society, and professional relationships are no different.
Instead, be a source of inspiration for others by building healthy relationships with your peers. Practice active listening and maintain an open mindset. Adopt and support this mindset shift in your lab and you’ll find just how much more enjoyable and meaningful your work can be.
